A common reaction to the climate crisis is anxiety.
Even though we don't want to admit it.
We don't read the news any more.
It's just too straining.
We feel a bit guilty.
But first we have to focus on our studies anyway.
It can't be that bad.
But what if?
These feelings will paralyze us, if we don't confront them.
That's what we are going to do in this seminar.
What kind of seminar is this?
In the "Climate Anxiety X Climate Anxiety" Seminar we look at our emotional coping with the climate crisis. We look at our anxiety about increasing natural catastrophes, and our fear of our perceived helplessness.
At the same time we also look at phenomenons in the political discourse around the climate crisis, and which emotional coping may underlie them. From the phenomenon that fewer and fewer young people follow the news, to the activism of civil disobedience to outright denial of the climate crisis and the science that describes it.
We work on these topics by reading texts together, going to the museum and simply opening up a space where we can give rooms to these feelings.
And who are you??
This seminar is hosted by the Leselabor, a student initiative that has organized interdisciplinary seminars at Goethe university since 2021.
Every semester we take a closer look at a topic, in order to formulate an interdisciplinary perspective together with students from other faculties, that challenge the narrow scope of our own academic disciplines and can guide our actions.
